PURPOSE
Paws Up Program is committed to improving animal health and welfare in Indigenous communities while respecting their cultural practices and traditions. PUP provides relevant education, support and resources while removing oppressive systemic barriers and working toward Truth and Reconciliation.
Rehoming dogs from the Indigenous community to ethically reduce overpopulation issues. This
is achieved by rehoming animals that are either relinquished by their owners or are strays, freeroaming
or abandoned. Many of these animals are sick or injured.
Consulting with Chief and Council in the development and implementation of animal bylaws, outlining the expectations for the community around the care and behaviour of their animals,
and helping them to understand their responsibilities as animal guardians.
Surgical spay and neutering to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the overall animal
population. This enhances the overall well-being of abandoned or stray animals and contributes to the safety and wellness of people in the community.
Respectful and relevant communication that identifies the services PUP offers, along with the value that they provide. PUP encourages community participation in all aspects from defining the issues to determining the solutions.
Improving access to veterinary care by removing financial barriers which prevent community members from spaying/neutering their animals, and helping offset the cost of emergency medical treatment.
Culturally appropriate programs to educate children and youth to gain a better understanding
of animal welfare, which will create a long-term positive impact on the next generation.
Providing food, shelter and other inaccessible resources that are necessary to meet the basic needs of the animals in the community..
